Message Rev. Melissa
Upchurch
(From
A Brief Statement of Faith, PC USA 1983)
We believe there is no condemnation
(Rom.
8:1, 28, 38, 39)
for we know that all things work together for good
for those who love God,
who are called according to God’s purpose.
We are convinced that neither death, nor life,
nor angels, nor rulers,
nor things present, nor things to
come,
nor powers, nor height, nor depth,
nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us from the love of God
in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
Prayers of the People /
Lord’s prayer (debts/debtors)

prayer is located on the lower half of page 35 in the purple hymnal.)

*Prayer of Dedication
God
of wilderness and Promised Land, in days of want and days of plenty you have
been with us. By these gifts we now
share, may others know of your providence and care. Send us
– not only our offerings – to console and comfort, to lift up and reach out, to
listen and sit beside your children everywhere.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

CALL TO CONFESSION
SPECIAL PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Litany of Penitence)
One: Let us pray:
All: Holy and merciful God, we confess to you and to one another, and to the whole communion of saints in heaven and on earth, that we have sinned by our own fault in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, an d by what we have left undone.
One: We have not loved you with our whole heart, and mind, and strength.
We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not forgiven others as we have been forgiven.
All: Have mercy on us, O God.
One: We have not listened to your call to serve as Christ served us. We have not been true to the mind of Christ. We have grieved your Holy Spirit.
All: Have mercy on us, O God.
One: We confess to you, O God, all our past unfaithfulness: the pride, hypocrisy, and impatience in our lives,
All: we confess to you, O God.
One: Our self-indulgent appetites and ways, and our exploitation of other people,
All: we confess to you, O God.
One: Our anger at our own frustration and our envy of those more fortunate than ourselves,
All: we confess to you, O God.
One: Our intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts, and our dishonesty in daily life and work,
All: we confess to you, O God.
One: Our negligence in prayer and worship, and our failure to commend the faith that is in us,
All: we confess to you, O God.
One: Accept our repentance, O God, for the wrongs we have done. For our neglect of human need and suffering
and our indifference to injustice and cruelty,
All: accept our repentance, O God.
One: For all false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts toward our neighbors, and for our prejudice and
contempt toward those who differ from us,
All: accept our repentance, O God.
One: For our waste and pollution of your creation and our lack of concern for those who come after us,
All: accept our repentance, O God.
One: Restore us, O God, and let your anger depart from us.
All: Favorably hear us, O God, for your mercy is great.
One: Almighty God, you have created us out of the dust of the earth. May these ashes be for us a sign of our mortality and penitence and a reminder that only by your gracious gift are we given everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Savior.
All: Amen.
[Voluntary Imposition of the Ashes]
Those wishing to make this penitential gesture of prayer may approach the chancel by the center aisle and return to their seats by the side aisles. Others may choose to remain seated, offering personal prayers of confession. Anyone experiencing mobility problems may raise their hand and Pastor Melissa
will go to them.
(Afterward):
One: Accomplish in us, O God, the work of your salvation,
All: that we may show forth your glory in the world.
One: By the cross and passion of our Savior,
All: bring us with all your saints to the joy of Christ’s resurrection.
